Antoinette Mobley spent much of her childhood in Bayview-Hunters Point. As an adult, she was tapped by Gavin Newsom, then mayor of San Francisco, to help revitalize the Bayview’s Third Street commercial corridor. Where drugs and systemic neglect had created a reputation of danger for the neighborhood, she set out to find the local assets that would reshape the narrative of her home. Her efforts to bring the community together through cultural and artistic events led to new energy for the population. In her interview, she creates a vivid portrait of sights, sounds, memories, and the hard work of moving bureaucracies to nurture the cultural assets of a neighborhood.

Recorded on May 12, 2018. Filmed by Tumani Onabiyi. Interview by Tumani Onabiyi and Lily Kharrazi.

“[Bayview] is a community of music... That’s our culture! Shit, we slam dominoes! We play chess. We like to sit in the park and be amongst one another. We like to chill on the plaza and engage.”
“Beauty just abounds, when art comes into play. It breaks down the walls of division, and it brings in a subtleness of peace and togetherness. And it unifies us.”
- Antoinette Mobley
