Martha interviews Chris Rodriguez and his daughter, Claudia Rodriguez. During their conversation, Chris and Claudia share their family history in Eastside Los Angeles neighborhoods and their involvement with Casa 0101, a local non-profit community organization dedicated to providing art and live theater programs to the community. They also try to describe the sounds that characterize Boyle Heights in their own words.
What sounds do you associate with Boyle Heights?
"I would say it's a cultural hub for like resistance music, you know, community music. That's what I think of not necessarily a particular genre because I know that, you know, different artists have come out of Boyle Heights that have done a really awesome job of kind of breaking through genres. So it's different genres, but I think it all has a root in movement music and music that celebrates our history. That's the sound that I think of, you know, its community organizing through the music." - Chris Rodriguez
