Heriberto Jaime Pérez is a truck driver, self-taught musician, and songwriter from Tepatitlán, Jalisco, in the highlands region of Los Altos de Jalisco, now living in Visalia, California. He began playing music around the age of eight, when he and his tíos—relatives close in age—bought two guitars and taught themselves to play. They performed informally around their ranch, walking to nearby towns for events, sometimes in rainstorms. That early family group grew into a professional ensemble that continues to perform today.

Heriberto plays guitar, guitarrón, and vihuela, and specializes in traditional norteño music, often accompanied by violin, trumpet, and accordion. Though much of his music-making has centered on family and community gatherings, he began writing songs more seriously during the COVID-19 pandemic, when work slowed, and he had time to reflect.

During the quiet of the pandemic, Heriberto composed “Dichosa con Él,” a deeply personal corrido shaped by emotional reflection and solitude. While visiting Mexico, he shared the song with his daughter and, to his surprise, discovered her ability to sing.

Moved by the way her voice brought the piece to life, he invited her to record it with his ensemble. Their rendition was later performed as part of ACTA’s Corridos del San Joaquín concert, adding a powerful, intergenerational dimension to the event. His daughter’s participation transformed the song into a shared act of memory and expression—blending personal history, family connection, and cultural tradition in a single performance.

Heriberto sees corridos as vital tools for storytelling—carrying personal, cultural, and historical weight. He envisions writing new songs that trace his own migration journey: crossing the border and building a life in the United States. For him, songwriting is not about career aspiration but about preserving lived experience and emotion. It is a practice rooted in memory and carried forward through family. With nearly five decades of musical experience behind him, Heriberto continues to contribute to a tradition that honors everyday lives with honesty and heart.

"The corrido is a tradition... it’s a root from the past, and I believe it should still remain."
