James Hundon, Martial Artist + Educator
The Role of a Black Educator
James Hundon, born and raised in the Bayview, is a martial artist and contemporary of the late Bruce Lee. His early neighborhood memories reflect on the joy of car races near Candlestick Park and Friday nights at Tic Tock's, a favorite hamburger joint. James opened a martial arts school in the Bayview and has taught youth free of cost for over 25 years. Inspired by his churchgoing mother, his dedication to youth is particularly geared toward young men whose lives are disrupted by the absence of role models due to incarceration, crime, and drugs. His vision for the future of the neighborhood is one in which the City invests more in the neighborhood, recognizing the people of Bayview-Hunters Point as its assets. He admonishes the City to bring its funding to the neighborhood and cites that the new rail system serves other neighborhoods successfully but slows down considerably the closer it gets to Bayview-Hunters Point, a sign of continued and historic neglect.
