Jeffrey Branner, preacher and activist, lays out the challenges of this historically Black neighborhood, which have included gentrification, asbestos contamination from the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, drugs and urban blight. Yet, the teenager who came to live in the Bayview at 13 years of age with his 8 siblings recalls the joys of congregating on Third Street with neighbors. Called to activism and the Church, Pastor Branner is active as a community builder, interfacing with many community based organizations (CBOs) to better the neighborhood he cares so deeply about.

“It takes the hood to save the hood.”
“We can’t do it individually. We have to do this thing collectively. We have to speak truth to power, and when we do that, we... come ahead ”
