Eighteen-year-old Osaze Seneferu is the son of Malik Seneferu, a self-taught painter, muralist and activist from Bayview-Hunters Point. Osaze reflects on growing up surrounded by his father’s serious pursuit of visual art and how that has influenced his own pursuit of a degree and career in art. Aspiring to continue his family’s legacy of activism, he sees art as a means for interacting, broadening perspectives, and challenging norms.
Recorded on May 12, 2018. Filmed by Tumani Onabiyi. Interview by Tumani Onabiyi and Lily Kharrazi.
"Once you have social interaction, especially within Bayview, that’s when you get the whole community to come in and… inspire other ideas.”
“The importance of art with youth is broadening our horizons and gaining new perspectives based upon our reality.”
