Sofia Velsaquez is a local resident of Boyle Heights who migrated from Apatzingán, Michoacan. In her interview with Margarita, she opens up about what informed her decision of not returning to Mexico and how the spirit of Boyle Heights and her involvement with local organizations in the neighborhood fueled her commitment and passion for helping others.
What do you like most about this community?
"My roots are here. I love the people. As my sister said, 'you love the atmosphere of the people, the arguende, the music." There is something, I can't describe, but there's something so strong that calls to me, that gives me the sense that I'm from here."
