“Soy de Guerrero” by Adrián Sánchez Ávila
Tribute to a Father’s Migration Journey from Guerrero to California
“Soy de Guerrero” is a deeply personal corrido composed by Adrián Sánchez Ávila to honor his father’s migration story. Written from the perspective of a son reflecting on the sacrifices of his father, the song celebrates the journey from San Martín Guerrero to California. At just 17, the father leaves his homeland with his brothers, seeking a better future for his family. Through imagery of labor, sacrifice, and resilience, Adrián crafts a tribute that highlights the dignity of immigrant life—where dreams are forged not through fame or fortune, but through daily work and familial love.
The lyrics reference the green mountains and beaches of Guerrero, situating the story in a place of cultural and emotional origin. That land lives on in memory, but it is the father’s struggle in California that defines the son’s pride and identity. Adrián uses the corrido form to “give voice” to his father, transforming individual memory into collective testimony.
The song’s genesis is also rooted in community. It was completed for the Concurso de Corridos del San Joaquín, an event that gave Adrián the structure and encouragement to finish his first full composition. His father had always supported his music—buying him a guitar, encouraging his creativity, and dreaming alongside him. The song is thus both a tribute and a fulfillment of shared aspiration.
